A definition of Object Detection?

Edge Computing and AIoT is an exciting space since it is an opportunity to use technology in new and innovative ways. Yet technology must deliver value to the stakeholders. Helping people and companies understand and unlock the value of the edge and AIoT and helping to deliver solutions that realize this value is what I spend most of my time doing these days.

Object Detection is a computer vision technique for locating instances of objects in images or videos. The algorithms used for object detection typically use machine learning or deep learning techniques to produce meaningful results.

For example, in the image that follows machine learning was used to build an algorightm that identifies boxes in a camera’s field of view. When a new image is fed to the algorithm it identifies all the boxes it sees. In this example we have drawn green rectangles around all the boxes that were found.

Another example comes from the field of worker safety. Often it is important to know whether the workers in a zone are wearing the appropriate safety gear. In this case, in the first pass, we can use object detection to find all of the workers. Then in a second pass for each worker, we detect safety gear.
