Setting up a free Microsoft Azure account and IoT Hub

Reading Time: 6 minutes

Head of Engineering and Architecture for ADLINK Technology

When using your Vizi-AI we at the time of writing utilise Azure IoT Edge to help deploy, update and maintain the devices in the field or even on your desk. This guide is designed to help you setup your own Free Azure account and your first IoT Hub that we use in other guides when setting up your Vizi-AI. As ADLINK has no control over the Microsoft Azure website the guide is accurate as of April 2020 and will be reviewed periodically to ensure accuracy.

Getting started

Firstly you will need to navigate to the Microsoft Azure website
(https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/) once here click the Green Start Free button.

This will take you to the next step in the process where they show you information on your free account, Click Start Free to progress.

If you do not already have a Microsoft email account then you will need to create one. Click Create One! To get started.

Enter the email address that you wish to create and click Next.

Next create your password and click Next

Next add your country/region and your date of birth, this personal information would be used if you needed to contact Microsoft and they needed to establish your identity for data protection rules. Then click Next.

You will then be sent a 4-digit code via the email address you have registered with to verify that you have provided the correct email details.

Then to finish creating an account enter the characters that you are shown on the screen and click Next.

Enter your personal information and click Next.

Then enter your phone number and click Text Me or Call me, I selected Text me and was sent a 6-digit code that I entered and clicked Verify code.

At this point you may see a spinning icon that shows you it is working to verify that code. It will be shown where the red highlighted zone is below.

The next step is to verify your identity via a bank card. As this is a fully free account you will not be charged on this card unless you choose to change your subscription in future with Azure. Once you have entered the details click Next to proceed.

Finally, within the agreement click to select that you agree with the agreements, links are supplied if you wish to review, and click Sign up to complete your sign-up process.

Once signed up you will be presented with a page where you can choose to register a time for a live demo or alternatively click Go to the portal to get started.

Once logged in you will be presented with the Azure dashboard, in future to navigate back here you will need to go to (https://portal.azure.com/#home) and log in with your user credentials.

To create an IoT Hub that we need for the Vizi-AI, in the search bar at the top type “IoT Hub” and select the IoT Hub presented in the services list.

You have now been taken to the IoT Hub home space, to create an IoT Hub simply click the Create IoT Hub button in the middle of the page.

You will then be presented with the IoT hub creation dialogue. One of the first things that Azure will force you to do is set up a Resource group. A resource group is a way to manage and control resources, permissions security across all of your Azure account.

Click Create New to get started.

Simply give your resource group a name and click Ok.

Then select the Azure Region that you want to set your IoT Hub in, it is probably more efficient if you set it up in the Region where your Vizi will be based, but there are no restrictions if not.

Then you must give your IoT Hub Name a name that is unique to Azure, this can be a little annoying at times as you would assume one that is just unique to your account but it is one that is unique to Azure globally. Once you have set one you will see a green tick as highlighted in Green below.

Once you have all of these details entered click Review + Create at the bottom of the page.

The IoT Hub you are looking to create is the default one provided (S1: Free Tier) this will provide you with everything you need for Vizi-AI. Once happy click Review + Create to proceed.

Whilst it is not necessary to add any Tags you may find them useful in future, for this explanation I will leave blank and click Review + Create at the bottom of the screen.

Now your hub has been fully configured review and click the Create button at the bottom of the page.

You will then see a popup in the top right corner of your screen letting you know that your Resource Group and IoT Hub are being provisioned automatically by Azure for you. This process can typically take around 5-7 minutes to finish.

Once your deployment is complete, click the Home link at the top left of the screen.

To navigate to your IoT Hub click the IoT Hub link highlighted below.

Here you will be presented with your IoT Hub to use in the next steps for provisioning your Vizi-AI.
